My favorite painting is called Saturn Devouring His Son by Francisco Goya. Over the summer I was looking at the painting and I had a vision of a man sitting at the end of a long mahogany table. There were chairs that lined the entire length of a table, each chair was filled by a baby doll. All their eyes were fixated on the man. He had a bowl in front of him, it was filled with plastic baby dolls and milk. He began to devour the baby soup. This idea also came from the Greek myth about Kronos and Rhea. There was a prophecy that one of Kronos’ children would kill him and take over his power so every time his wife gave to his their newly born child, he would eat it. That is until she tricked him by handing him a rock instead of the new baby, Zeus who later went on to fulfill the prophecy. Obviously this was not what ended up coming out with this film. The names for the main characters, however, originated from this story. Tempus is called this since Kronos and Tempus both mean time. Rhea is called Rhea as that is the name of Kronos’ wife in Greek mythology. And Petra means “rock” in Latin. I couldn't bear to separate from these names as I wanted my film to have some connection to the original idea that kick-started it all. When I was young, I had a fascination with Greek mythology and I knew that I wanted to give an old myth a new twist for my senior year film. Eventually, the idea spiraled into something entirely different from the main story but if looked at closely enough, one can still see where the inspiration came from.
When a passionate yet closed-off woman, Rhea, can not have a baby, she takes to a new, highly-unconventional approach to having the family she has always wanted.
Due to complications Rhea is not able to have a baby with her husband, Tempus. Tempus finds a solution but takes an unconventional route which changes their lives forever. Rhea now has a baby. However, it is not the most “perfected”, you could say.
Rhea and Tempus, a middle-aged couple, are having infertility issues. The couple must put on a brave face and support their friends in the celebration of their pregnancy. While at the gender reveal party, they run into a distant nosy relative, Steve. Steve mentions how he and his wife have tried a few unorthodox methods of fertility themselves. The couple shakes it off and leaves the party. When they arrive home, Tempus receives an email from Steve that contains a link to a new pill that will help with Rhea’s infertility. The next day Rhea finds a package addressed to her that contains a baby doll and some pills. When the pill is taken and paired with the CGI-like baby doll, the doll comes to life in the consumer’s eyes. It acts and functions just as a real baby would. This could be the solution to all of Rhea’s problems, however, there is just one issue. The pill’s effect only lasts for about an hour and can only be taken three times a day. This new pill has unknown consequences that Rhea will soon encounter.
